Chapter Twenty

Nick stopped at the bar on the way out of Rain’s office.

“What’s up, Nick?” the bartender asked as she grabbed a glass and a bottle of Johnnie Walker Black.

“Make it a double.” While she poured, Nick thought about what he’d just done.

I did it, but I’ll probably regret it in the morning.

When she handed him the glass, Nick drained it.

“Thanks,” he said and left J.R.’s. He got in his car and headed for home. Having spent all day and half the night working on the proposal for Black with April, he was tired.

When six o′clock rolled around, he suggested that they call it a night and pick up where they left off in the morning. But April insisted that they keep working.

“I just need to call my husband and let him know that I’m working late, and speak to my son.”

Nick sat and tried not to listen while April talked to her husband. But being a trained observer, he couldn’t help but notice her mannerisms and facial expressions while she talked to him. The exchange between husband and wife was cordial, polite even, but it was tight and just a little strained. But when he put her son on the phone, her mannerisms and facial expressions changed. She was bright, enthusiastic, and loving. When she hung up the phone, Nick started to ask her about it, but then he figured it was none of his business and they got back to work.

Later in the evening, they got on the subject of presenting it to Black in Freeport. Nick told her that she had to be there when he presented it. April told him that she’d never thought about her going along; she assumed that it would be him and Meka presenting it to Black.

“Mike Black,” April said, and Nick wondered why every woman says his name like that. “I haven’t seen Black since that night at the party. I’ve talked to him plenty of times, putting deals together for him, but that was the last time I actually saw him.

“Have you ever been there?”

“To the Bahamas, no.” April laughed a little. “Marvin, that’s my husband, Marvin and I don’t travel much.”

“Why’s that? If you don’t mind me asking.”

“He doesn’t like to travel, so we don’t.”

Nick sat back and thought for a second. “I seem to remember you saying that you loved to travel.”

“I told you that?”

“You did. At least I think you did. I don’t remember much of that night. It was one wild party.”

“That it was. That night … it changed my life.”

“How so?”

“After that night, I stopped doing drugs and I don’t drink as much as I used to those days.”

“I see.”

April looked at Nick for what seemed like a long time and tried to decide if she was going to ask him the question she’d been wanting to ask for years since that night. Thinking that this was as good a time as any, April went for it.

“How much do you remember of that night, Nick?”

“That night at Black’s party? Not much.
